Setting up a skewer: sacrifice

In this lesson we look at sacrifice by capturing. In Example 1, we see how a sacrifice forces two enemy pieces in alignment. In Example 2, we look at the elimination of a defender.

What do you have to do?
Sacrifice a piece with a capture. Locate a head piece or eliminate a defender. Subsequently win material with a skewer.

The black bishop on c6 and black rook are on the same diagonal. However, White cannot take immediate advantage of this. Against 1.Bb5, black plays 1...Bxb5. Better is to place a piece on c6: 1.Rxc6! If black does not capture the rook, white has simply won a bishop. If black does capture the rook (1...Kxc6), the king can be targeted. Now 2.Bb5+ is a lot better for white than it was a move ago. It is skewer! After 2...Kd6 3.Bxe8 white stays ahead a bishop.
